Why I Can't Finish My Novel

Well now, this was a fun exercise. I wanted to find out what exactly was keeping me from completing my first novel. After approximately one week of logging my activities, I've discovered a really interesting profile and the reason behind my procrastination.

I’ll keep this one short because it is a Friday and it is time to drink beer and hang out at Geo’s Pool & Pub.

If you are having a hard time keeping disciplined about your writing, feel free to share your percentages. You don’t have to do it in a graphic like I did, just post it in the comments. J

Happy Writing!

  1. Haha! I like the "watching people at flea market." My biggest distraction with getting my novel done is I have too many projects and I also like TV.

    1. I can't believe I read more than I write, but hey, I love to be entertained. The flea market is the secret to lasting happiness. I absolutely love the people there. It's not a business, it's a way of life! Thanks for stopping by. An idea for you would be to chart the amount of time you spend on each project. Then the chart will show you which one is most important to you and you can concentrate on that one, make it your priority. Look at me, trying to give advice! Psssh, I'll stop. :D

  2. Wow, I think I have you beat on some of the TV watching and emails. Very cute. I don't want to waste your time. Your pie chart makes me think of pie. Maybe I'll bake one. Have a great day Diane!

    1. I have to admit, I do some of my emailing and texting while at work! :)

      Save me a piece!

  3. Right now editing for my clients is keeping me from writing my new WIP. But I'm not complaining--too much. I love editing and it's still writing related.

    1. Editing is my favorite part. I don't know why it didn't show up on my chart! :)

  4. What's getting to me at the moment is school finals. Someone do it for me! Hahah :( *serious* But I do try to focus what little time I can on writing and editing. So help me God.

    1. I feel ya, Karla. Your name in the same area with the word God makes me think of a fictional character I created named Karma. :)

Thanks for stopping by and reminding me of this character. I might want to post her shorts sometime!

  5. I like the pie chart. There are plenty of ways to procrastinate! I'm trying to get the hang of blog hopping. I'm also a novelist. Self published one novel, and revising a second.

    1. I have a few blog hopping posts in which you can participate. Just search blog hop or blog chain in my search bar above and join the fun. Even the archive ones get you out there meeting other fellow bloggers.

  6. What a great pie chart! I love it. I can definitely attest to the "working" being a good 50% of why I can't finish. 25% more is probably procrastination-- a terrible habit I am currently trying to remedy (I think I'm doing a good job, this problem was most likely closer to 30% a month ago!)

Playing with my dog is another huge one-- but they're alone so much during the day that I feel bad not giving them love when I get home :(

Hmm... another part of the equation? Re-watching the last several seasons of 30Rock on Netflix ;)

Great post! Got me thinking about what I need to do (or stop doing!) to get this WIP finished!

  7. I love the pie chart. I'm a terrible slacker. I was going to join the national Procrastinators Club but I waited too long and my application expired.

  8. Good to see that drinking beer (4%) beats housework (3%).

  9. This is such a great graph ... and oh ... it hits very close to home!

    I miss Dr Phil ...

    Good luck and keep writing!

  11. Top distractions include house porn of all types, estate sales, a day job, the dog, the Noles, and the hubby - not necessarily in that order. Keep at it, I promise you that having a finished book in your hand is the best rush ever! But don't give up Geo's Pool & Pub, sounds like a great place.

  12. I get distracted easily too and I had never thought to do it up statistically but it's a good idea. Undoubtedly I would find time is being wasted somewhere!!
